The World Health Organization (WHO), the branch of the United Nations responsible for health-related matters has compiled a list of symptoms, syndromes, disease processes, pathologies, traumas and conditions that have definitely been proven as effectively treated by acupuncture.
In 1997 the National Institute of Health released a consensus statement regarding their findings on the effectiveness of acupuncture where it was state "One of the advantages of acupuncture is that the incidence of adverse effects is substantially lower than that of many drugs or other accepted medical procedures used for the same conditions".
